Admissions to Schools – HEMS policy and procedure
** Communal activity section updated Oct 18th 2009

Pre registration

Any parent who wishes to have their or their child’s attendance at synagogue recorded for the purposes of a Certificate of Religious Practice (CRP) must advise the HEMS office in writing by 5pm on the Thursday before the Shabbat from which the parent requires attendance to be recorded. If the parent requires attendance to be recorded for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, notification to the HEMS office needs to be made by 10am on Thursday 17th September 2009. Registration is only required to be made once.

The notification for members should state the name of the child and date of birth. The notification for non members should state the parents name, the child’s name, the child’s date of birth, the home address, phone number and email address.

A register of attendance containing the names of all those notified by the deadline will be at HEMS before each service.

Alan Goldner will be responsible for the register and will ensure that attendances are properly recorded.

Synagogue attendance

On a Shabbat the child/parent should make him/herself known to Alan Goldner on arrival at HEMS. If Alan is not available, then Edwin Lucas will deputise. The child/parent should arrive at HEMS no later than 11.00am and are expected to stay for the duration of the service/children’s service.

On Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur the child/parent should make him/herself known to Frances Marx between 10.00 – 10.20 (Rosh Hashanah) and 11.10 – 11.30 (Yom Kippur).

Attendance is not able to be recorded where this has taken place at another synagogue unless verification from that synagogue in writing has been obtained by the parent.

Communal activity

Any parent who wishes their/their child’s acting in a voluntary capacity in a HEMS related activity to be recorded for the purposes of a CRP will need to meet the following criteria: (a) the activity must be regular and (b) the activity must have been carried out for a continuous period of at least 6 months prior to the date on which the CPR is required to be signed. Regular fulfilment of allocated synagogue rota duties constitutes regular communal activity for this purpose. Decisions as to whether other activities constitute “communal activity” will be at the discretion of Alan Goldner.

Signing of the CPR

A CPR will only be completed if it can be verified by the register. When a parent is ready to submit a CPR for signing, this should be sent to the HEMS office. It is the parents’ sole responsibility to ensure that they get the form signed prior to the school’s deadline. It is recommended that this is done as soon as the required amount of points has been obtained.

Queries and registration

All queries and registration concerning the CPR should be directed to the synagogue office at office@hems.org.uk or on 0208 866 3620.

This policy and procedure is subject to change.
